Dr. Michael G. Martin

Dr. Michael G. Martin - Director of Choral Activities. As former assistant conductor and accompanist of The Ohio State University Men’s Glee Club, Dr. Martin’s passion continued to grow deeper and resulted in the development of numerous choral groups within the educational and community environment. After writing his first major work at the age of 17, Martin pursued a college career at The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor, Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in education and choral music. He has studied with Robert Ward, Russel Mikkelson, Marshall Haddock, James Gallagher, Hilary Apfelstadt and Maurice Casey

While at Ohio State, Martin had the opportunity to study with and served as accompanist for the Late Robert Shaw, as well as an invitation study at the Robert Shaw Choral Festival Chorus in France in 1994. He has also performed and conducted major concerts throughout Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, and France and performed on the BBC network. Martin has conducted the Hilliard Darby Symphonic Choir on tours of England and the United States, which included performances at St. Paul’s Cathedral and at Carnegie Hall, New York for a performance of Durufle’s Requiem in 2006. Most recently the choir was invited by Dr. Craig Jessop to sing at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C. for the National High School Memorial Day Choral Festival in 2011

Recently, Dr. Martin was awarded third place in conducting by The American Price in Music Education in 2018 and Symphonic Choir won third place in an All-American Composer category by The American Prize – both nationally awards.

The choral groups at Hilliard Darby have consistently received superior ratings at district and state level OMEA events and have been ranked as one of the finest choral programs in the country.

In addition, Martin performed and conducted his own arrangements for men’s voices with the OSU Men’s Glee Club of such notable works as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera and Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns, two of many arrangements included on the group’s recordings. His compositions are published with Alliance Music, Houston, Texas, Lawson Gould, and he is also a writer and arranger for Alfred Publications, Miami, Florida.

He has prepared choirs for notable conductors such as Dr. Eph Ely, Dr. Rene Clausen, Dr. Craig Jessop, Dr. Donald Neuen and composer/conductor Eric Whitacre.

Martin’s career has spanned many facets, both in and out of the classroom. As a graduate teaching assistant and visiting professor at The Ohio State University, martin served as conductor of University Chorus, Symphonic Choir, Chorale and Men’s Glee, as well as instructor for undergraduate vocal pedagogy courses and conducting classes. Martin’s civic responsibility has involved his creativity in arranging and conducting choirs and dramatic presentations for citywide celebrations, televised broadcasts, and weekly worship services with the community.

He currently serves as Director of Music for New Albany Methodist Church and is called upon as clinician and commissioned composer for various honor choirs and festivals throughout the Great Lakes Region.

Mrs. Hannah Sterman-Wilson is the Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Hilliard Darby High School. She graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Music Education and Theatre minor. While at OSU, she received numerous music and leadership scholarships and awards and held officer positions in various organizations. She received her Master of Music Education degree from the internationally renowned University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She has studied with notable conductors and pedagogues including Dr. Eva Floyd, Dr. Kevin Holzman, Dr. Kristina MacMullen, Dr. Scott McCoy, Dr. Ann Porter, Dr. Richard Schnipke, and Dr. Robert Ward.

Mrs. Sterman-Wilson is the conductor of the Darby Treble Chorus and Belle Voce, Co-Conductor of Concert Choir, and she is the assistant conductor for Symphonic Choir and Polyphonix. In addition, she assists with various Heritage choirs, co-music directs the Darby musical, serves as an advisor for the district's eSports Club, and coaches the League of Legends teams.

Mrs. Sterman-Wilson's choirs have toured throughout Ohio and have received superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Contest. They have participated in various collegiate workshops, collaborative concerts, OMEA Convention performances, and have worked with notable conductors such as Dr. Craig Jessop, Professor James Gallagher, and Dr. Kristina MacMullen. In addition, they have performed internationally, touring Ireland and Italy, including a performance at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. Most recently, they had a performance featured in an Ohio Choral Director's Association Conference.

As a singer, Mrs. Sterman-Wilson has performed around the country, starting with her professional musical theatre debut when she was eight years old. She toured throughout the United States and Europe, including performance venues such as St. Mark's Basilica in Venice and Carnegie Hall in New York. She has also performed with notable musicians such as Andrea Bocelli, Heather Headley, and John Legend, and most recently was a featured soloist with the New Albany Symphony Orchestra. Outside of school, she is a section leader and assistant conductor for The New Albany Symphony Chorus and choreographs for events around the community.
